ANN ARBOR–The data from a study of social media’s impact on key political attitudes and behaviors during the US 2020 elections will be archived at ICPSR, part of the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research.
Since early 2020, a group of independent academic researchers, in partnership with Meta, has been studying some of the most important questions around the role of social media in democracy today: Does social media make us more polarized as a society or merely reflect divisions that already exist? Does it help people become better informed about politics, or less? And how does social media affect people’s attitudes toward government and democracy?
The data shared are intended to allow the broader research community to extend these analyses and validate the findings of the papers that are set to be published in peer-reviewed journals in 2023 and beyond. Researchers interested in accessing the data for further research are encouraged to sign up for email updates.
The research teams have taken years to collect and properly analyze the data, and they are still working on publishing findings in 2023. Their data will be archived in the Social Media Archive (SOMAR) at ICPSR.
